Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andreas Maier Appointed to the Bavarian AI Council

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andreas Maier, head of the Pattern Recognition Lab at Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU), has been appointed as a new member of the prestigious Bavarian AI Council (Bayerischer KI-Rat).

The Bavarian AI Council comprises 21 internationally renowned experts from academia and industry. Its core mission is to advise the Bavarian State Government on artificial intelligence matters, promote innovation and research within the BAIOSPHERE initiative, and reinforce Bavaria’s position as a leading AI region globally. The Council is further supported by seven international ambassadors advocating for “AI Made in Bavaria.”

Prof. Maier brings extensive expertise in pattern recognition, machine learning, and medical engineering to the council. His work at the Pattern Recognition Lab has significantly advanced interdisciplinary applications of AI, notably in healthcare, digital humanities, and speech and image processing. His appointment underscores the importance of interdisciplinary research and the growing influence of AI across various domains.

“I am honored by this appointment and eager to contribute to Bavaria’s ambitious vision for artificial intelligence,” said Prof. Maier. “Through collaboration and innovation, we can leverage AI technologies to address complex challenges and improve societal well-being.”

Prof. Maier joins a distinguished group of experts on the Council, led by Prof. Dr. Dr. Fabian J. Theis and co-chaired by Prof. Dr. Björn Ommer and Thomas Hahn, Chief Expert Software at Siemens AG.
