Abstract:  As a research team focusing on psycho-somatic comorbidity, JoyLab’s studies have, through the integration of multiple data resources and technological innovation, comprehensively illustrated the elevated risks of various somatic diseases following traumatic events and psychiatric disorders, as well as their genetic determinants. Also, Prof. Song has conceptualized the term ‘disease module’, which refers to clusters of diseases with high levels of connectivity (i.e., strong temporal and non-temporal associations) identified through data-driven approaches. With the notion that diseases in the same disease module may share common pathological mechanisms, we consider it is reasonable to focus on disease clusters, instead of each disease, to develop disease prevention strategies. This is the so-called ‘module-based disease prevention’ research framework, which provides new insights into how to reduce the general health decline after a diagnosis of psychiatric disorders.

In addition, for obtaining high-quality data from Chinese patients that can be used for both phenotypic and genotypic studies, JoyLab has developed a new system for facilitating and standardizing hospital-based cohort database construction and management. Using this system and together with collaborative teams of clinicians, our lab has established four (three patient cohorts+ one LGBT cohort), collecting high-quality, multidimensional data from over 30,000 individuals.

Prof. Song’s research team (JoyLab) is interested in epidemiological research related to stress/trauma and its health consequences, as well as the construction and application of cohort databases. As the first or corresponding author, she has published over 70 articles, including those in top journals such as JAMA, BMJ, Nature Communications, JAMA Psychiatry, JAMA Neurology. These works have been reported by over 200 media outlets, including The New York Times.
