Pattern Recognition Lab at FAU Launches Official GitHub Organization

The Pattern Recognition Lab (LME) at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) has launched its official GitHub organization: https://github.com/PRLab-FAU.

With this new presence on GitHub, the lab is creating a central public space where research software, code related to scientific publications, and teaching materials developed at the lab can be shared openly with the wider community. The new organization is intended to make the work of the lab more accessible to researchers, students, collaborators, and anyone interested in pattern recognition, medical imaging, health engineering, and related computational methods.

Researchers and students at the Pattern Recognition Lab develop and implement algorithms for the classification and analysis of patterns such as images and speech. The lab’s work is highly interdisciplinary and has a strong focus on medical and health engineering. In addition, the lab maintains close national and international collaborations with universities, research institutes, and industrial partners.

The GitHub organization will serve as a home for publicly available repositories from the lab, including research software and code accompanying publications, as well as teaching material created for courses at FAU. By bringing these resources together in one place, the lab aims to support transparency, reproducibility, and knowledge transfer across research and education.

The Pattern Recognition Lab, also known as Computer Science 5, is part of the Department of Computer Sciences at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg. Founded in 1975, the lab has been shaped by generations of leadership and scientific contributions. It was founded by Prof. em. Dr.-Ing. Heinrich Niemann, later led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Joachim Hornegger, and since 2015 has been headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Andreas Maier.

“The launch of our GitHub organization is an important step in making the lab’s work more visible and more accessible,” said Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Andreas Maier, Head of the Pattern Recognition Lab. “We want to provide a place where the community can find software, teaching resources, and research outputs from PRL in a structured and open way.”

The new GitHub organization can be accessed at PRLab-FAU and will continue to grow as additional repositories are made publicly available.
