The Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) are funding a research and development project at FAU with the aim of automatically evaluating image sequences from aerial photographs taken during regular monitoring flights in German coastal areas. These recordings are used to monitor populations of birds in particular, but also of marine mammals.

The 3 year project is being carried out by the Institute of Geography (Prof. Matthias Braun) in cooperation with the Pattern Recognition Lab (Dr.-Ing. Vincent Christlein).
