This year the Pattern Recognition Lab was again very lucky with different awards at MICCAI 2020. It is a great pleasure to report on them here and to congratulate all winners!

  • Mareike Thies was selected as runner-up for the IJCARS MICCAI 2019 Special Issue Award
  • Andreas Maier was selected as one of the finalists for the MICCAI 2020 Educational Challenge
  • Felix Meister won the Best Presentation Award at MICCAI 2020’s STACOM Workshop
  • PRL Alumn Oliver Taubmann won the Best Paper Award at MICCAI 2020’s MLMI Workshop
  • Katharina Breininger won the MICCAI 2020 Young Researcher Award, the most important award of the conference! Great to see that Katharina continues the path of successful Young Researcher Award Winners in 2020, after Florin Ghesu in 2017 and Bastian Bier in 2018!

Felix Meister, PhD student at the Pattern Recognition Lab, was awarded the best oral presentation award within the regular paper session at the STACOM workshop, which was held in conjunction with MICCAI 2020. The award was given for his work on “Graph convolutional regression of cardiac depolarization from sparse endocardial maps”. This paper is the first of its kind, where geometric deep learning is used to extrapolate electrical signals from sparse data.

Fabian Wagner received his Master’s degree in Physics from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. He joined the Pattern Recognition Lab in October 2020 as a Ph.D. candidate under the supervision of Prof. Andreas Maier. His Ph.D. research project focusses on in vivo high-resolution studies of living bone to understand osteoporosis (4-D nanoSCOPE). The project will be carried out in cooperation with Universitätsklinikum Erlangen and Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin. His research interests lie in Monte Carlo simulations for dose estimation purposes and deep learning.

Title: A Sparse Resultant Based Method for Efficient Minimal Solvers

Abstract:
The content of the talk has applications with algorithms in Computer Vision where one needs to solve camera geometry, usually as a part of RANSAC-like loops. So the applications can be reconstruction, augmented reality, camera calibration, structure from motion, etc. The idea is to model geometry problems by using minimum amount of information. Many computer algebra software can be used to solve such problems accurately and efficiently. Solving such problems is usually divided into two stages, Offline and Online. Offline stage involves the more time consuming operations that are executed once per type of problem, e.g. relative pose (stereo) for calibrated cameras can be solved from 5-point correspondences. Our approach compares against the S.O.T.A. in terms of speed and accuracy. The underlying tools are inspired from algebraic geometry.

Aleksandra Thamm received her Master’s degree in Electronic and Mechatronic Systems and specialized her study in Automation Technology at Technische Hochschule in Nuremberg. She joined the Pattern Recognition Lab in August 2020 as a Ph.D. student under the supervision of Prof. Andreas Maier.
